Kennedy Express Lanes to O'Hare Reopening Sunday as Construction Project Enters New Phase

(WTTW News) (WTTW News)

Motorists heading to O'Hare Airport from downtown will be able to use the express lanes on the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) again starting Sunday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced a new traffic pattern and change to the work zone, occurring roughly a month ahead of schedule.

Since March, drivers have only been able to access the airport from downtown via local lanes, as part of an ongoing bridge and ramp rehabilitation project.

Lanes will be reconfigured, weather permitting, beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday and the new pattern should be in place by 10 a.m. Sunday, according to IDOT.

Here's a timeline of what drivers can expect during the reconfiguration.

— Starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, reversible express lanes will close.

— At midnight, the outbound Kennedy will be reduced to one lane between Addison Street and Montrose Avenue. Expect ramp closures too.

— Lanes and ramps will reopen by 10 a.m. Sunday.

The new traffic pattern will allow crews to work on the right lanes of the outbound expressway between Addison and Montrose. This phase is expected to last through mid-July:

— Reversible express lanes will remain open in the outbound direction.

— Two mainline outbound lanes will be closed.

Here's the schedule of upcoming ramp closures and openings.

Closures

— June 5: Ontario and Division streets to outbound Kennedy, for approximately two weeks.

— June 9: Outbound Kennedy to North and Fullerton avenues, for approximately two weeks.

Openings

— Week of June 9: Ogden and Armitage avenues to outbound Kennedy.

— Week of June 9: Outbound Kennedy to Ohio Street.

The entire project is on track for overall completion by Thanksgiving.
